The College Board offers two AP Latin exams, a Vergil exam specifically focused on The Aeneid, and a more general Latin literature exam. Both exams are about much more than just Latin translation. Students are expected to know the literary works as literature and to be able to discuss character, theme, and literary techniques. With AP students as far away as Switzerland, David understands how the exams work, and has both the literary experience and the Latin knowledge to make your exam prep successful.
Keys to AP Success:
- A solid prior foundation in Latin. If your Latin is weak, perhaps the AP exam isn’t for you, and you should consider private Latin tutoring first.
- Focused study of exam-specific Latin vocabulary.
- Guided reading and discussion of the works in English translation with an eye towards AP essay questions.
- Rapid translation strategies to help when working under exam time pressure.
- Practice question/answer sessions with a detailed analysis of how various answers would have been scored and what should be done to maximize points.
